Acknowledging Dual Coding theory for PowerPoint presentations would ensure I avoid displaying text on the screen, then reading the same information. This causes people to absorb information verbally (through eyes and ears), overloading one channel of information. A more effect way is to have key points on the slides accompanied by images, then verbally expanding on the multimedia slides so people can absorb verbal and nonverbal information.
Above, the importance of keeping PowerPoint slides brief is described in detail.
Behaviourism and the concept of Flow is important in a class about online and multimedia learning because effective learning is when students are hyper-focused and engaged. Especially with our online world, it is important to minimize distractions, providing intrinsically rewarding tasks that students want to do. Multimedia is effective because accompanying text with visual aids improves engagement.
The concept of Flow reminded me of painting my house. It was intrinsically rewarding because I wanted to change the colour. Progress was seen as the walls changed from yellow to white. Immediate feedback was given by my roommates so I could evaluate my work. The task was not too difficult where I felt like giving up, or too easy where I got bored. Also, I stayed focused on the present moment, acknowledging my goals.
The Hypothes.is tool allows for connectivism because it creates opportunities to learn and share information online. A potential drawback is that this online platform is not face-to-face, so immediate and conversational answers cannot be provided to the same degree.
