Creating a multimedia lesson plan before creating multimedia content is so important because lesson plans are the base of the organization. They require thought and attention to detail to ensure the needs of the learners can be met and proper supports can be available to every student. This preparation will help navigate through obstacles and challenges in lessons this ease, if they take an unexpected turn. With today’s mainly online, asynchronous learning atmosphere, the need to plan lessons ahead of time is even more important to ensure a successful teaching environment. A well thought out lesson plan also provides the best opportunity for students to stay engaged because potential distractions can be accounted for ahead of time and eliminated.

A multimedia principle that directly relates to videos with embedded multiple-choice questions is the signalling principle, where cues highlighting key information help to improve learning. These multiple-choice questions that appear are valuable cues that test knowledge and improve comprehension levels. This is an active form of learning that requires the students to focus on the material. The spatial and temporal contiguity principle also applies because relating words and pictures are more valuable when presented close to each other. This is why an embedded multiple-choice question following the learning of new information is effective. The feedback principle is also important because people learn better when they can easily and instantly get feedback on their mistakes. This allows people to correct their thinking right away and learn the appropriate answers.
